We are a class of 26 second graders in a PreK-8th grade school. My students are sweet, energetic, diverse, and hungry for knowledge!
My students arrive at school excited to learn and ready to achieve.
They are bursting with questions about the world around them. When the lessons and materials are engaging, there is no end to their curiosity. They love to design, create, and share. I want to continue to foster their love of learning and provide them with the tools necessary to succeed.
My Project
Second grade is a huge year of growth when it comes to reading. Students are transitioning from simply reading the words (decoding) to understanding what they are reading as a whole (comprehension).
The number one barrier I come across when teaching reading is a lack of motivation.
One of the best ways to become a more fluent reader is to read, of course! Again, and again, and again. In my classroom we have a small collection of graphic novels for younger readers and they are always in high demand.
Several of my struggling readers recently discovered the Eek and Ack series and asked if they could read during free time! With the TOONS collection, I can create lesson plans and activities around engaging graphic novels. The picture support provided by graphic novels is also a huge help in developing comprehension. Please help me provide the books that my kids are excited to read again and again and again.
