Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Can you imagine a world without being able to communicate your basic wants and needs? My students with Multiple Disabilities in grades K-5, experience this every day of their lives. My students are non-verbal, visually impaired, with physical and cognitive disabilities. The consequence of not being able to communicate impacts the quality of their lives, development of social skills and relationships. Their inability to communicate may translate to frustration and lead to negative behavior.
I can only imagine what my students may be feeling-having their thoughts imprisoned inside their heads waiting to be set free!
My students are AMAZING children that want to communicate with the outside world but require additional assistance for their voices to be heard.
My Project
Assistive Technology can transform the life of a non-verbal student with Multiple Disabilities. It can not only allow students to improve and develop communication but increase independence, decision making, social interaction and a better understanding of their environment. My students have a difficult time expressing themselves. Therefore, it is important to find resources to support their ability to communicate.
My hope is that my project will give my students an opportunity to learn how to communicate and express their needs to others.
Currently, my students have limited resources for communication and rely on pointing, eye gazing and gestures to make choices. When the opportunity is there why not facilitate a communication system so that my students may communicate in a meaningful manner. The devices that I have selected are designed for various levels of communication. These devices are designed for my students to make simple requests and choice making which will lead to other more complex devices. The Enabling Device Twin Talk is a precursor trainer and allows the user to make simple choices.
