I teach both a 9th grade health class and a 11-12 AVID elective class. The 9th grade health class is only a semester class but with the content we cover (nutrition, drugs, sex ed, physical fitness, mental health, etc.) we really get to know each other very well. These students are engaged and interested in topics that will be relevant to them for their entire lives.
My 11-12 AVID class has completely changed my life.
For many of them, this will be their third year in AVID with me and we have formed a very strong bond. AVID stands for Advancement Via Individual Determination. The course is designed to teach them how to be successful in all of their other classes, in college, and beyond. These students applied to and were chosen for AVID because they are classified as low-income, being the first in their family to attend college, belonging to a minority group, or having special family circumstances such as foster care or homelessness. Additionally and most importantly, they have to demonstrate a motivation and work ethic to be successful.
My Project
In my health classes, students will use these devices for researching information about nutrition facts, mental health issues, and infectious diseases. They will also be used to create presentations introducing themselves to me at the beginning of the semester so that I will better know my students.
In AVID, these devices could help send a student to college.
The Chromebooks will be used to research colleges, apply for scholarships, apply for financial aid and apply for colleges. Some of our AVID students do not have internet access at home and this is the place for them to reach for their goals.
