Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
We are teachers and therapists in a small busy suburb in northern New Jersey collaborating together to improve our educational environment. We are a community where students are empowered to exceed their potential. Our school consists of over 500 students with various backgrounds. Many of our students struggle with sitting still and attention to task during instructional time. We strive to provide the least restrictive environment for our students when this meets their individual needs.
Flexible seating helps kids increase their readiness to learn.
Kids shouldn't be mandated to sit still and focus on the task at hand. Studies have shown that students that utilize physical activity during the school day have increased focus for on-task behavior. Sitting still is hard for anyone, and is especially tough for our kids in school and more so for our special needs children. Children have high energy and active minds and it can be challenging to stay still and pay attention to their teachers for extended periods of time without breaks to engage their other senses. Flexible seating can provide teachers a way to create an effective learning environment helping facilitate increased focus.
My Project
A Donors Choose project was created this past year to supply our self-contained with flexible seating in their classroom. These chairs have been a success and are frequently borrowed by other classrooms with students who share the need of flexible seating during their instructional day. Teachers are seeing the benefit of flexible seating use in their classrooms for their most wiggly students. Providing strategies and accommodations for students in their natural environment is key.
Having flexible seats available school wide will greatly benefit our special education population.
Active seating like wobble chairs allow children to wiggle, wobble or move their body in a controlled manner while they sit. This movement keeps sensory systems controlling balance and muscle-use engaged. When these systems receive the input they crave, the child is able to shift their focus back to seated activities and classroom listening.
