I have a group of 26 students this year from all different academic abilities. 3rd graders love to read news articles and deepen their understanding. This is a critical grade level as students are expected to take the state test for the first time. They need to be proficient readers to meet the standards for promotion. By funding this project, you will help students receive Story Works Jr. which will be used to help strengthen reading skills, increase vocabulary, and help them gain knowledge. The magazine subscription will provide differentiation to meet each student's needs during reading center time. I am excited to introduce this to my students this year to get them excited about learning and to gain a love for reading!
My Project
I have received Scholastic News for my classroom for the past 2 years. My students and I enjoyed it however I am looking for a magazine subscription that is more fiction based to increase those skills. This is the perfect substitution! Story Works Jr. has critical thinking questions and many fiction stories to read. Students love reading these magazines in their reading centers daily. The magazine is laid out nicely and includes all the reading features that are important. Story Works is aligned to state standards and by having this in my classroom, students will be more than prepared for their state test at the end of the year. 3rd grade is a critical year for reading and showing growth. It is a goal of mine to aid each child at their current reading level and Story Works is a good example of the differentiation that is included in the magazine. By having engaging stories in the magazine, students will be hooked on reading and will begin to read more independently to deepen their knowledge.
