I teach in a public school on a military base in SC. Our student body consists of military children as well as children in low income families that have chosen to send their children to our school due to our status as a "Choice School" under NCLB. We are considered a "High Poverty" school due to the fact that the majority of our students receive free or reduced lunch.
Due to the nature of some military families and the fact that many parents are deployed throughout the year, leaving these children with one parent at home as well as the financial situation of many families having both parents working many hours, several students' families are strained for not only money, but time.
This affects the students academically. Our parents sacrifice so much for their children and for our country. I feel indebted to them and feel it is my duty to serve them to the best of my ability.
In the past, I have been very successful in raising students’ scores in language arts but am now searching for ways I can continue the success in the classroom in the future. As we become more dependent on technology in our every day lives, it is important that our students are exposed to its uses regularly in order to master important skills which will be used for the rest of their lives.
My Project
One of the objectives of fourth grade is to introduce technology, computers, and typing in the language arts classroom. Unfortunately, many students do not have the opportunity to practice at home. Having a computer in our classroom where students could have regular access would be invaluable to them. My students would have time to work on typed projects, to create power point presentations, to use the Internet, and to play games while learning and preparing themselves for their future. Please consider donating for this cause. My students this year, next year, and for many years to come will truly benefit from having a laptop in our classroom.
You will take part in instilling a knowledge base in technology these students will need in their future and improve the chances of success for so many children.
This is something that I personally cannot afford to do on my own. With your help, I will be better equipped to do my job, one I love, and I will be extremely grateful...as will my students. Thank you for your consideration.
