My 4th grade students are awesome in their willingness to learn and be a great productive citizen. I have 2 groups made up of about 50% LEP and transitioning into English. I teach them math, science and social studies. This past summer they were victims of Hurricane Harvey and missed 2 weeks of schooling. They are still trying to overcome their losses and do not have technology nor WiFi at home as their parents can barely provide their basic needs. They are learning to love math and especially math computer programs. My students enjoy science projects and research to discover the world we live in. My class welcomes new students without looking for differences for we are learning through social studies acceptance of differences between us. They so enjoyed Hispanic Heritage Month by doing a project and meeting an Hispanic Opera singer and famous ballerina. They are preparing to research a famous Black American for Black HIstory Month.
My LEP boys and especially my girl scholars would greatly benefit having Chromebooks to increase their interest in STEM to encourage them to pursue careers in that area. This technology will help me develop rigorous, relevant, and individualized instruction to promote growth for each student. In assisgning lessons on the computer, it will motivate and inspire my scholars to feel comfortable and confident using technology for anything and everything.
Unfortunately my scholars come from low income families that are barely surviving by providing basic needs.
I know that providing them with technology in my class will give them easy access to it for math lessons and science and social studies research. The Chromebooks will allow my students to bridge their gaps in math to achieve success in 4th grade and be promoted to 5th grade and increase higher thinking. I am positive that Chromebooks will increase their interest in STEM and open their world of learning to unlimited levels.
