Increase Movement and Mindfulness to Increase Learning
Help me give my students opportunities to increase movement and mindfulness in the classroom. The wiggle chairs and bands will make it possible for my students to remain seated and still get the movement they crave.
We spent the first week of school talking about how to have the BEST class for the BEST school year ever. We discussed words that would help us become the best. At the end of the week, my class chose the words; brave, kind, and respectful to focus on.
I see my students choosing to be brave, kind and respectful every day.
We have two students who have special needs and I often see kids being kind by including them, helping them stay organized or encouraging them. We recently had an individual reward drawing and one student shared his reward with another student because he could see that the student was sad that he didn't win this time. My students bravely answer questions even when they are not sure they are correct, read their own stories to the class, tell the truth and show up even when they have difficult things happening in their home life. One student recently responded to a writing activity with details about how hard it is for her now that her parents are getting a divorce. My students exemplify respect by being good listeners, showing gratitude and finding ways to serve others.
My Project
We know that kids benefit from being able to move often and yet there are not many opportunities built into the tradition classroom. I would like to provide my students with equipment that allows to remain safely seated while increasing their ability to balance, wiggle and fidget. Often times students get up and move around the classroom or tip in their chairs because they need to move and yet if they had the option of more movement at their desk they could spend more time focused and engaged in learning activities.
Many of these supplies will provide our classroom with lots of quick and simple ideas that will allow us to add movement and mindfulness practices to our daily routine.
Increasing mindfulness will increase students resilience, stamina and cognitive abilities which will lead to students being able to focus for increased time periods and learn more.
