Students in a math class can generally build a wall against class participation caused by years of built-up anxiety over the subject. One of the things that teachers continually struggle with is increasing the student participation. When students are participating and engaging in the learning there is a greater comprehension, motivation, and retention of what they are doing. I am proposing the use of individual whiteboards by the students in my class. Each student is given a whiteboard at the beginning of class that they are to use throughout the lesson. Questions can be asked of the class so that the students write the answer on the boards and hold it up for me (the teacher) to see. In this way the student is less concerned with how they will be perceived by their peers. They won't be scared to get an answer wrong because they are not the only one answering. An added benefit is given to me in the instruction. This tool allows me to gauge how much is being understood so that I know whether to move on. Generally when questions are asked the same students are the ones providing the answers. This limits the amount of class participation from everyone else. I have seen this idea used before to a great deal of success. This is why I am requesting a class set of whiteboards. The whiteboards come in sets of six. Therefore, one class set would require 6 sets of them.
