Our students are an amazing and diverse group of learners on the rural island of Kauai. We have many tech resources, but the quality and relevant readings are harder to come by. Our students come from healthy families and also very poor, unhealthy or uneducated families. Giving them what they need in the classroom can help overcome any other barriers they may face.
Almost every day, a student tells me they "never read" or "haven't read a book since elementary school;" it is my hope that with a variety of literature, students might see that reading is a valuable and enjoyable skill to have.
My Project
We are looking to add to the variety of media used in our 11th grade English classroom. We have been building our novels and literature section and now are looking to magazines for high-interest reading.
Please support our classroom with high-quality, nonfiction periodicals; relevant topics mean students are more likely to engage with the text and develop meaningful literacy skills.
Through this variety of reading options, I hope to reach more students who consider themselves "non-readers". Perhaps if they have the chance to read interesting publications, they will become more and more likely to pick up the next magazine or book they come across.
