Increase Literacy for Students with Special Needs

My students need new books (and supplies to support comprehension) to read during their intervention class.

My Students

"People often say that motivation doesn't last. Well, neither does bathing--that's why we recommend it daily." - Zig Ziglar, motivational speaker. My students lack the motivation to want to learn or read in general. I am hoping to introduce them to new books to motivate them to want to read.

Currently my students do not have the motivation to read, I am hoping by introducing them to a new text, I might be able to peak their interest.

My students consist of students (grade 9-12) with mild learning disabilities. I work in the largest school in the state of Oregon as well as one of the poorest. With more than 80% of our students on free and reduced lunch, my students priorities are often not on free reading time but in survival mode. We are changing our way of servicing them by creating a class to deliver specially designed instruction (SDI). By doing this, I need to create an entire curriculum, which we do not have money for.

My Project

I am hoping to find support through you to get books for my classroom such as "Looking for Alaska", "Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children", and various other books for silent reading time. I will use the supplies for various comprehension activities. Sticky notes will be used for thoughts, questions, and connections. I give about 15 pencils out daily to students who need them for other classes and pens are always missing from my desk. I am hoping to supply my students with some of the items that they lack due to economic status.

What the research tells me is that when children or less literate adults start reading for pleasure good things will happen.

Their reading comprehension will improve, and they will find difficult, academic-style texts easier to read. Their writing style will improve, and they will be better able to write prose in a style that is acceptable to schools, business, and the scientific community. With these books I allow my students the ability to choose
