My students need iPads to find reference photos to use in their artwork, to use as a resource to learn about artists and different art styles, and to explore the world of digital drawing.
I work in Harlem, New York, at a school where the students are vivacious, curious, creative and hardworking- especially when it comes to creating Art! They love engaging projects where they can truly use their imaginations to express themselves and think outside of the box to arrive at innovative solutions. They come to class ready to learn, explore, and grow both personally and academically! Our students are fearless when it comes to technology and, as children of the 21st century, they need to be prepared to use a variety of tools to engage in a constantly changing world.
My Project
While the use of technology has become increasingly important in education, we have unfortunately had a limited amount of devices available to students in our school. We have stuck exclusively to photocopies of limited reference images and have been unable to advance our student body’s capacity to use computers, tablets and other devices to enhance learning and creativity in the Art room.
To shift towards a more technologically rich Art program, we would like to start using iPads for our daily instruction.
Through the use of different applications, students will be able to explore the world of digital drawing and design, while having internet access will give them the tools to learn about new artists, techniques, and provide them with reference images they may choose to reproduce in their own pieces of art. With these iPads, we can also introduce the world of photography to our curriculum.
Students will develop electronic organization skills and a fluency with technology that will be valuable to them for the rest of their lives. Many schools have already begun shifting to a one-to-one model for technology in which each student is assigned an iPad for use in and out of school. We need to be able to keep up with these schools in order to give our students the technologically rich education they deserve.
