This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
I have just completed my very first year of teaching second grade at a title I school in Valdosta, GA. I had the privilege of teaching 20 wonderfully unique 7 and 8 year olds.
The majority of students at my school come from a low-socioeconomic background, and they each bring their own unique personality, talents, and value into the classroom.
They have taught me so much in my first year of teaching, and have surprised me every day with what they are capable of. I am looking forward to a new year with a new group of second graders.
My Project
Play is a necessity for students at this age because it allows them to make discoveries and connections on their own and to practice much needed social skills. Unfortunately, there is not much time in our already busy schedule during the school day for free play. That is why I am wanting to implement these morning tubs for this upcoming school year. I am hopeful that they will help decrease the amount of student tardiness, improve students' social interactions, and create a fun, non-threatening environment to start the day.
By replacing morning work with morning tubs, I can get my students excited about coming in the classroom each morning!
Each group will have a different tub waiting on them each day to explore, learn, and play during the time between their arrival and the morning announcements. These tubs will be filled with a variety of play-based learning materials that allow students to practice skills such as cooperation, sharing, fine motor skills, literacy skills, creativity, recognizing and creating patterns, and much more. One morning students may work with phonics dominoes and dry erase boards to make and write words. The next morning they may be building with cubes, or molding and shaping with play-doh, while another group is getting creative with a variety of art supplies. After playing, creating, and socializing, my students will be ready to begin our day of learning.
