Help me give my students books to support their social emotional well being (B is for Breathe, Listening to My Body, Good Morning Yoga, and Goodnight Yoga) and sensory items (weighted dog and sand ball shapes) + more!
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
I teach 15 preschool students between the ages of 3-5. My classroom is an inclusion classroom, which means that I will have general education and special education students. Every student deserves a classroom that will meet their needs.
Preschool students learn best through make-believe play, stories, and exploration.
The majority of my students are living at or below the poverty line and our classroom is their safe place. Unfortunately due to financial strain many go without all their needs being met, let alone extra educational experiences.
I like to use the time I have with my students to meet their needs to the best of my ability and provide them with background knowledge on our thematic units. Reading books about the theme and transforming my centers into realistic settings are ways to open them to new experiences while giving them skills to last a life time.
Not only did I find that my students needed more background knowledge but I have noticed an increasing need for sensory items to help create a calm and peaceful environment. The social- emotional component in preschool is just as necessary as the play component.
My Project
I have selected items that I feel will most benefit my students. I have found an increasing need for social emotional supports along with sensory items. When students social and emotional needs are met they are more successful. I am working with Preschoolers who are just learning and trying to understand their emotions and navigate though them all while acclimating to school. Supporting their needs and providing them books that they can use independently will help them to be more successful in the classroom. The sensory items are important or my students because school can be extremely stimulating and they can take the sensory items and use them to calm down and disengage for a few moments.
The majority of our students my school district are eligible for free and reduced lunch which means that the majority of our students are living at or near the poverty line.
This is the cause for need of the books which explain basic concepts. Many students aren't exposed information that will help them to engage fully in our thematic units. I have picked books about the supermarket, shapes, colors, counting, going out to eat, family, and many more. These books will allow me to give my students the background information that they need so that they can fully benefit and learn though play throughout the thematic units.
I have also added a few classroom necessities to the list; labels to label all of the bin and shelves so that the students will have a seamless and stress free time playing and cleaning up, laminating paper to laminate items for their sensory bins and printouts that go along with the thematic unit, and easel paper.
