Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
As a Physical Education teacher, I am faced with the challenge of motivating high school students to want to participate and learn to live healthier lifestyles. Using technology that interests the students makes learning to be more active fun for all students, with and without disabilities.
I currently teach a wide variety of high school students at a low-income school.
Last year we developed a Physical Education Program for the 3 classes of students with severe disabilities to be partnered up with general education peers in a new inclusive class. The non-disabled peers benefit from learning more about the students with disabilities, how to work with them in P.E. class, and what great people they are. Our students with disabilities learn new activities from their friends, not just their teachers, and begin to build lasting relationships with friends outside of their own classrooms.
My Project
I am requesting 1 Xbox One with the Kinect Motion sensor, plus 4 extra controllers, to help them participate with their non-disabled peers in fitness-related games.
It is our dream to have a XBox One with the Kinect Motion Sensor in order to help some of our more severely disabled students be able to participate in the dancing and fitness games that the video game console offers. We have used a Wii in the past and it is amazing to see how all students gravitate towards the game and want to participate. The system allows four to eight students to simultaneously play the same game, all while moving their bodies and interacting with the game software. I have seen students in wheelchairs be able to outscore students without disabilities which is truly an empowering sight for all. I have also witnessed how using technology can help facilitate participation and inclusion for all students regardless of ability level.
Since we are at a low-income school, without the generous support from potential donors like you and the Donors Choose organization and the Chevron Fuel Your School Grant, we would not be able to fund curriculum-enriching technology such as the gaming system requested.
