This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
"Teachers open the door, but you must enter by yourself." -- Chinese Proverb
We are opening doors for the students that receive special education services--the doors to the general education classroom. We have numerous challenges in this endeavor; a Tool Kit would be a solution to one challenge.
"We have an obligation and a responsibility to be investing in our students and our schools.
We must make sure that people who have the grades, the desire and the will, but not the money, can still get the best education possible."
Barack Obama
The population of students at our elementary school in southern California is 100% socioeconomically disadvantaged and 96% are English Language Learners. We have a passionate staff that is dedicated to reach every student. The staff reach deep into their hearts and pockets to provide whatever they can for our students.
My Project
A goal for our students who receive special education services is to be included with their general education peers. In order for us, as staff, to accommodate their needs and support them adequately, we need to be organized and prepared. Having a Tool Kit in each of our general education classrooms would be a fantastic resource for us and allow us to effectively and efficiently modify the curriculum. Our ideal Tool Kits would include materials, equipment, supplies, and instructional guidelines for differentiating curriculum. We would keep a Tool Kit in each of the general education classrooms that our students join. It would prevent interruptions to the general education to ask for supplies, etc. It would also provide a central location for all of our materials and assignments. Our students would be able to participate in all of the same activities as their peers, just modified to meet their needs. Our students will have access to the state standards and curriculum.
By fulfilling this request for Tool Kits, you will be providing easier access to the general education curriculum and California State Standards for the students who receive special education services at our school.
These Kits will not only make a difference to these students, but also to the general education students. Our staff will be able to efficiently and effectively use the materials and supplies to adapt the instruction for all students in the classroom. We can meet the needs of all!
