Help me give my students books that tell the true stories of the African Diaspora like Caste to the second book of the Legacy of Orisha series and the experiences of Blacks, Latinx, and people with disabilities.
My students have learning disabilities and are on the Autism spectrum. In spite of their disabilities, they have great questions and insight into the world around them. We need some high-interest, high-quality books that focus on antiracism, respecting diversity, and the struggle for inclusion. As they become more aware of the challenges of others, my hope is that they will see similarities to their own struggles for acceptance and inclusion.
Our high school students need high interest, high-quality books about Diversity.
We want to fill their reading space with young adult (YA) and adult books just for them.
My Project
The experiences of Blacks, Latinx, Indigenous Americans, and people with disabilities are incredibly diverse, but they include similar themes of wanting to be seen and respected for who they are and what they can do if given a chance.
Books that require our students to grapple with hard truths like Caste and Kite Runner can help them see beyond the stereotypes and can give them a broader range of voices and viewpoints.
Even though we already have a few titles from the diversity lists in our library, we need more depth and variety, whether for assigned reading or for personal enjoyment.
