I teach a wonderful group of excited, motivated 5th graders eager to take their learning to the next level. Our students are enthusiastic learners with a multitude of abilities and aptitudes reflecting their culturally diverse backgrounds. Although many of our students come from socioeconomically disadvantaged families, we work hard to overcome obstacles, to achieve, and to be successful.
We are a Title I elementary school in the California Bay Area with the majority of our families living in low-income housing and homes with multiple families under one roof.
Our school has the most dedicated, caring staff, administration, and families that work hard to close the achievement gap together. Every day you'll see kids and teachers smiling and laughing in and out of the class, parents happily chatting amongst each other and with teachers, and students helping each other. At our school, we are one big family where teachers love teaching and students love learning.
My Project
Wonder by RJ Palacio is the perfect book to start off the school year especially for our 5th graders, our oldest student-role models at our elementary school. This book addresses themes such as bullying, family, friendship, leadership, acceptance, inclusion, and kindness. Our classroom theme of the year is kindness, and I know my students will learn to choose kind after reading and connecting to this inspiring novel.

Your donation will enrich our classroom community with kindness and how they treat one another. Each student will need their own copy to study and analyze the text closely in order to make personal connections. This amazing book will not only be used to teach and reinforce social emotional skills, but also to study literature in depth through class discussions about its central themes.
Fifth grade is a time of change for many children as they start to figure out who they are and where they fit socially. This book will give my kids an opportunity to experience life through a different perspective and help them gain a better understanding of how to face life challenges.
