Celebrate Black Teachers and Students

This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.

My Students

Goal setting is a necessary skill when approaching any task. Children should be taught this at an early age; unfortunately, this is not the case with the majority of my students. Through reading selected literature, they will be incited to do so.

My students live in the third highest crime area in our city.

Ninety-eight percent of our student population participate in the federal free or reduced lunch program. In spite of the statistics, my students have a desire to learn, our attendance is over 90%. We have a very determined staff that does encourage and motivate our students.

My Project

I have read "Touching Spirit Bear" with previous classes and was amazed at the metamorphosis that took place. I noticed a change in their attitudes and behavior, but it was not just that one book that incited them the desire to change. They began to dialog more and exchange ideas. These resources would assist me in encouraging my students to read more, to internalize the positive attributes, and learn that goal setting is primary in the undertaking of any task, especially the task of life. Through this carefully chosen literature, my desire is that my students will learn how to set goals, that obstacles don't necessarily mean that they can't accomplish what they set out to do and that these skills will last a lifetime.

Education is not just about reading, writing and arithmetic.

It is about learning how to think, problem solve and communicate on several levels. The impact of reading with a focus on character building will incite my students to seek a better quality of life by setting and pursuing their dreams.
