Incentives! A BIG must at my school. I teach a third grade class in a large school in south Louisiana. Ninety-five percent of the students are on free or reduced lunch.
I've found that my 3rd graders will do just about anything for a reward. That is a big part of my job because motivation to do the work and do the right thing is quite a challenge. These students are not challenged at home and are given very little encouragement.
I give treats randomly during the day for: random acts of kindness, good behavior in line or in class, staying on task, finishing a class assignment correctly, for math drills, being brave enough to answer a question not knowing if it is right or not,
helping their peers with a problem, and many other different things.
In order to coax these students into participating in class, doing their work, using proper manners, respecting the rights of others, having good conduct and studying and doing well on tests, these incentives are greatly needed. I spend a lot of my own money on supplies and the basic classroom needs of my students, I have no funds available for incentives. I would like an assortment of small candy treats, pencils , erasers, mechanical pencils and homework passes.
Please realize how important your contribution would be to my third graders.
It would make a difference in their day to know that someone cares and wants them to do well. Your help would be greatly appreciated!
