Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
The students at my school come from very diverse ethnic and socioeconomic backgrounds. Our school is an off-site extension (alternative ed) of the public high school. We reconnect and engage at-hope youth that is affected by poverty, family instability, and homelessness. Each day they face obstacles that have the potential to prevent them from coming to school and obtaining their credit towards their high school diploma.
We value diversity, creativity, flexibility, empathy, resilience and positive, healthy relationships.
We believe these are all essential for students to develop their academic, leadership and social skills.
My Project
The Inaugural People’s Choice Award acknowledges the students of CALC who make a positive contribution to our community and demonstrate efforts towards improving their own lives. These are not the students that normally are chosen or rewarded for their efforts. Each CALC staff member nominates ONE student to honor. The students are told they have been chosen the week before the event, but WHO nominated them is a secret until the night of the awards. At the event, each staff gives a SHORT speech about why they nominated their student. It is a special evening and one that truly celebrates the growth and success of our students.
Family and friends are encouraged and invited to attend.
We look forward to making this a special event annually. Donors will also be invited to this event.
