Celebrate Black Teachers and Students

This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.

My Students

I've worked at my school on staff with the marching band for seven years and became the band director two years ago. I can genuinely say that I work with some of the kindest, most passionate students I've ever come across. They deeply care about music and their band community.

Our school is located in the state of Minnesota's oldest suburb just south of Minneapolis, calls itself the "urban hometown".

We have the community of a small town but the diversity and opportunities of a metropolitan city. Our student body is truly diverse, and we're stronger because of it.

My Project

We've really stepped up the level of playing and expectations in our marching band. The past two years, we've placed at almost every single competition and our community buy-in is growing.

We need to take our musicianship to the next level and focus on our tuning.

As students become stronger musicians, they need to be so focused that they're aware and adjusting their pitch on every single note. This is already difficult, and adding marching and visuals often gets in the way. By adding Snark tuners into our regular rehearsals, students will have a visual of their tuning and feedback that will help them adjust at the moment. This will help build good habits so that they learn to listen and consistently do it on their own.
