My students need a place to put their folders and notebooks, which is why I am requesting the literature holders. They also need folders/notebooks/pencils/sharpeners.
80-90% of my kids receive free or reduced lunch, a blatant indicator of poverty. This poverty translates into a lack of supplies and resources for the classroom. All students should have basic supplies to do their work. They need somewhere to store these supplies that are easily accessible.
All of my students are bright and capable of learning!
I have seen this and believe it wholeheartedly! This is what keeps me going in the midst of challenges.
What are the challenges?
1. My students are very behind academically.
2. My students impoverished.
3. My students are learning to embrace and navigate their and others' racial identities in a diverse school.
My Project
As I previously mentioned, most of my students are impoverished. Now that we are more than halfway through the year, their basic school supplies--paper, pencils, and notebooks/folders are either used up or worn out. My students' families have more pressing financial strains, and I don't want to burden them with supply requests. However, I can't count how many times students have come to class without a pencil and/or paper. I am determined that this cannot and will not be a barrier for learning.
In addition, students need somewhere easily accessible to put their supplies. My current folder/notebook organization system results in traffic jams at the beginning and end of class. Students also accidentally place their things in other students' hanging file folders. This wastes our learning time, as they struggle to access and find their things promptly.
I know that this project is expensive, but please know that it will make a world of difference in my classroom.
We will have the basic supplies we need to learn and--just as importantly--somewhere to put these supplies.
