Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Our school's demographics are diverse, with the majority of our students being of Hispanic heritage. Such diversity means that we have many cultural traditions to draw from when making connections to new music.
These wonderful students demonstrate to me every day their ingenuity, kindness, and musicianship.
They are a highly motivated group of young people that I know are headed for big things.
Our students are cared for and nurtured but are held back by either poverty or a language barrier. Our extended school family embraces all of our children and work to do what is best for "our kids."
My Project
Much of what makes a performance special is the emotional impact it has on the audience. Our band is working on a piece, Qin Shi's Stone Army, that requires a specific "sound." I've borrowed the necessary gong, or tam tam, but no one has a china cymbal.
Having these instruments also means that our percussionists will get experience on a wide range of instruments, better preparing them for future musical endeavors.
It will essentially improve their percussionist resumes. Additionally, I am finding that students are unable to get the reeds they need in order to achieve a more sophisticated sound. Especially for clarinet players, this specific line of Vandoreen is a quality reed that is difficult to find in stores. Being able to give my students a great reed will unify their sound for the spring concert.
