Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Our school is an amazing school which provides outreach to students and their families. A subscription to a magazine that will be utilized at school and at home will help our students and their families have better access to reading materials.
We serve a community of students and their families who are predominantly English Learners, and with nearly 80% of our students designated as socioeconomically disadvantaged, having access to a variety of reading materials is essential.
My goal is to acquire a subscription to Scholastic News for ALL of the second grade students at our school for the 2019-2020 school year so they will have more opportunities to read non-fiction text to be able to connect with their community and their world. Second grade is a pivotal year for exposure to written text as newly proficient readers move from "learning to read" to "reading to learn."
My Project
With a subscription to Scholastic News and the online resources that are included, our students will be able to read on a regular basis about topics that are both current and interesting to 2nd graders. Imagine eight year olds being able to read about a school for orangutans, learning about recycling gum, understanding the importance of robots or what it was like to immigrate to America in the 1900s. The students this year have benefited from articles like these both reading them at school and then later at home. We would like to continue this again next year for the incoming 2nd graders.
