Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I remember when I was young and was able to open my very own magazine to read. It excited me to read about other people and places. I want to offer my students an opportunity to own their magazine and expose them to relevant and current news. Books are fun, but are not the only source for Reading.
My school is located in a low socioeconomic neighborhood.
98% of the school receives free lunch. The only news they are exposed to, is the crime they are surrounded by on a daily basis. I offer them safety and comfort. I share with them news from around the world that is intriguing to them. They enjoy this very much! I know they would be ecstatic to own their own magazine full of News they would like to learn about.
My Project
The News Magazines would be a great way for my students to become exposed to relevant news of today. The magazines are colorful, age appropriate, and full of illustrations. I know the magazines will not only activate prior knowledge, but intrigue them to want to learn more, research, and to converse about relevant topics. They will learn so much. Stories and picture books are a great source for reading, but I know these magazines will show that other Genres are just as fun to read.
I hope my students are given the opportunity to be blessed with donors that will fund the project.
It is important for me to know that my students can have a sense of ownership. As a mom, I can afford to have my son receive a magazine. I enjoy the look on his face when he receives it, when he sits and reads it, and when he talks about it. I want my students to have that same opportunity. Their parents can't afford it and I don't want that to be the reason. I want them to be "In the Know".
