Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

"BE THE CHANGE!" I want my students to experience a humanities (focus on humankind: our development, our culture, our diversity, and our commonality), thematic, writing-based approach to learning, by studying various disciplines within the context of language arts or English.

I want my students to study various world cultures through the disciplines of literature, social institutions, art and beliefs, as they are related by themes.

My students will learn critical thinking using a global perspective; they explore the diversity of cultural expressions and the effects on nature, societies, and the individual. They will be taught the skills necessary to comprehend, critically think, and synthesize the learning into coherent essays written during each unit. I aim to develop inquiring, knowledgeable and caring young people who help to create a better and more peaceful world through intercultural understanding and respect by exploring knowledge claims and explore knowledge questions. I want my students to become inquirers, knowledgeable, thinkers, communicators, principled, open-minded, caring, risk-takers, balanced and reflective! I want my students to be critical thinkers: to raise questions, to share insights, and to discuss. We are a Title 1 school.

My Project

In exploring critical global issues, we will read novels, short stories, poetry, plays, essays and various primary and secondary non-fiction materials all year. Our coursework includes interdisciplinary exams, quizzes, objective tests, oral presentations, speeches, class discussions, group work, multimedia productions, art projects, research projects and various writing assignments. We will use the texts to discover multiple perspectives on how people deal with oppression. Les Blancs is a play about resistance, accommodating and withdrawal from domination. Tao of Pooh will be used as a way to deal with life when things are difficult. The films will be used to show real life experiences of domination. The paints will be used to create life size humans out of the kids ideas on oppression based on their beliefs and epistemologies. We will finish with a reading on accommodation with Red Azalea while discussing the Great Proletariate Communist Revolution of China.

My students are at the best school however my students are at one of the most poverty rich schools.

Our vision is that our students will achieve self-actualization. Our mission is to achieve social justice through the development of the complete individual. In doing so, we increase our students’ social capital and their humanity while creating a school worthy of our own children.
