My students are in Pre-K which means that they are young, moving all the time and constantly growing. This means that they are constantly hungry.
My students get breakfast and lunch in the classroom each day, but with the amount of activity they do each day, they seem to quickly burn off what they have eaten.
The time of day when my students seem to be the hungriest is after their outdoor play time in the afternoon. When we come back into the classroom, the first thing they tell me is, “I’m thirsty or I’m hungry”. The very next thing they ask is, “Can we get water or juice or a snack from the refrigerator?” Most of the time I would love to give them what we have left over from breakfast or lunch, but with the warmer weather, they are quickly drinking and eating all that they get to eat.
My Project
I would like to be able to have healthy snacks and a drink to give to my students throughout the year, whether it is after outdoor play time, at mealtime when they would prefer water over milk or after a day on a long trip when they are tired, hot and thirsty. I want to know that if one of my student’s were hungry or thirsty, I can give them a healthy snack. By providing my class with these items, I can provide a better afternoon and the ability to learn better in school.
It seems like such a small thing, a few animal crackers, a bag of cheese crackers or a bottle of water.
But to a hungry child, it makes a big difference! Especially, my little Pre-Kindergarteners who are experiencing school for the first time.
