This is a classroom that hosts 9th graders for geography and ELL students of all grade levels. The school itself is a high-poverty area: 85% are on free or reduced lunch, but as a school, we're very focused on ensuring that despite the odds, all of our students are college ready when they graduate, since even if they are unable to go to university, the reality is that the vast majority of jobs need people who posses the abilities of a college freshmen.

Just this year, we have been following up on a request from students to begin a speech and debate team. It's been a whirlwind as we sort out the paperwork required to start up a program and navigate the world of forensics.

What stands out though, is when we go to tournaments, we don't have what the other established programs have. This request for stopwatches is the first step to make this program tangible. For those of you who have participated in speech and debate, you know all too well how important it is to have your timepiece nearby.

I don't want to play the pity card, but we barely have enough funds to participate in tournaments. Just getting stopwatches that can be used in their events is going to go a long way in creating a team feeling for the students!
