Help me give my students the basics for our classroom. By this time of year, students have run out of the supplies they brought at the beginning of the year and the supplies I purchased.
My class is a diverse group of individuals. Our school is in the center of a small city. My students are made up of Native American, Hispanic, African American, Hmong, and Caucasian backgrounds. All of my students receive free breakfast, lunch, and healthy snack due to their socioeconomic status. Several are part of the backpack program, which sends food home with students for the weekend. The majority have multiple adverse childhood experiences.
Despite these factors, my students are a creative, resilient, interesting, and kind group of individuals.
They are a pleasure to know and instruct.
My Project
Students will use the dry erase markers, pencils, and pens every day. They use dry erase boards for creating story problems in math and having each other solve them. The special pens are used for their writing. The felt tips slow their writing down and it improves handwriting. Students will be using these supplies for all subject areas and it will enable them to make it through the lean season after Christmas. Supplies are running low throughout my room and they are dipping into my personal emergency supplies. The majority of our students face many socio economic challenges and these supplies will relieve both parents and students of a burden. Families are often faced with balancing providing needs and items for the holidays.
