My students love to read nonfiction books! We just need more books to support their reading.
My students love learning about the real world through nonfiction books.
Their interests vary - some love to read about other cultures while others can't get enough about snakes. The beauty of reader's workshop is that each student gets to choose books that are at their just right reading level, and of interest to them. Additionally, our school has a diverse population of students with the majority being African American, Latino, and Asian/Pacific Islander. Over 60% of the students attending our school qualify for free or reduced priced lunch.
My Project
These books will be read by students throughout the year, with an emphasis at the end of the school year when we have nonfiction book clubs. While students read nonfiction text, including Why Do Snakes Hiss?, Speedy Cheetahs, and Everybody Cooks Rice, just to name few, they work on strategies such as synthesizing what they learned, using text features to provide more meaning, and responding to the text. With the new Common Core Standards, students should be reading more nonfiction text so these books will directly support this thinking and learning.
Our classroom library needs more nonfiction books across various reading levels to support students while they read, think, and learn.
They will not only improve their reading and thinking skills, but they will learn more about the world around them!
