Do you have heart? Our students would love to! Seventh grade is the first time in the middle grades that students get to study the human body. At this age seeing is believing, so by having hands on practice with the heart, they will be able to make connections beyond basic text and lecture.
My students show more dedication to their "jobs" (school) than most adults do.
These are a group of 7th grade students that attend school from 8-5 and then most stay after for extra curricular activities or study help. Then they continue to pursue knowledge and learning by completing homework. Some of my students have a commute of over an hour to get to school! These students come to school willing to learn from the minimum materials, but why should they? Such hard work should be rewarded with hands-on learning. These students deserve exposure to all the materials that their high income peers receive. My students zip code should not dictate a a lesser learning experience. By providing these materials, students are able to have more social capital, more real-world problem solving experiences, and a greater opportunity to become inspired by the sciences.
My Project
There are some things in science that you will never forget doing. I am sure dissecting organisms is one of those things that we can continue to make connections with many years down the line. I am requesting dissection kits that include pig hearts so that my students will have a chance to practice lab skills and make connections between human anatomy and physiology. By exploring the pig heart, they are manipulating the closest organism to a human heart and will be able to become true believers about the magic inside their bodies. The kits include all of the supplies necessary for the dissection experience including trays, scissors, guides, rulers, and magnifying glasses.
I am also requesting a set of cow eyes as an incentive for the students who show the most interest about the heart dissection. A few students will be chosen to dissect the eyes and then show the class what they have discovered!
All we need now is your donation to make the students have this amazing experience
Please consider that these hard working 7th graders will only have an opportunity to complete this lab with your help!
There will be connections made to human anatomy, health, along with lab and dissection procedures. By seeing the heart and the parts up close, it is my hope to inspire the students to realize how beautiful our bodies can be perhaps inspiring future doctors to emerge from the classroom!
