I am a 3rd grade special education teacher in a title one elementary school, with 99% of the students receiving free lunch. We are located in the Far Rockaway section of Queens. The 3RD grade Social Studies curriculum is learning about communities and people around the world. To meet the New York State Standards my class is taking part in the Flat Stanley project. This project teaches about communities, towns, states and countries around the world. My class connects on the Internet with other classes who are also doing this project. We then exchange our Flat Stanley (a cut out of a character from the book FLAT STANLEY written by Jeff Brown) through the mail. During the week that we have a visiting Stanley, we are responsible for taking care of him and for keeping a journal of his adventures while at out school. An important part of this project is to take pictures of Stanley's adventures in our city and write about them for Stanley to take back to his hometown. A digital camera and photo printer would be used through out the year to take and print pictures of our adventures with Flat Stanley. We are also putting these pictures on a map to display to our schoolmates what towns, states and countries we have learned about. Due to my students academic disabilities they learn best through hearing and seeing what is being taught. When looking at these pictures my students get to better visualize what different parts of the world look like. Not every town or city has apartment buildings and elevated trains like Queens, NY. This is a wonderful learning experience for my students and I hope to continue doing it for the rest of the school year and more to come. Thank You!
