This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
I teach reading to struggling first and second graders at a charter school in Harlem.
Realizing the need to reiterate strategies taught I would like to create bookmarks that students could use again and again. If I was able to laminate the bookmarks they would last through the unit and if necessary through the year. Additionally, I would like to create cards that parents could use as a reference while reading with their children at home. All too often, children are told to "sound it out" when that may actually hinder their progress as a reader. The strategies taught need to become automatic - having laminated cards will help achieve this!
Having a laminator will allow me to create the necessary material to help my struggling readers become readers who are reading at or beyond their grade level! The materials I will create will last and I know the children will look forward to receiving and using them!!
Your help will ensure that my students will become lifelong readers. You will make it possible for me to create reference sheets/cards for my students and as a result they will become better readers!
