My students love reading. They are all so diverse: some quiet, some outspoken, some serious, and some silly. Some learn easily while some take time and still others need extra help to come to an understanding of the material. Some are kind and others are still learning to be better teammates—aren't we all? Some don't think they are good mathematicians or writers or readers or scientists but are starting to believe that mistakes are proof you are trying and that it's ok if it’s hard. The best things are.
My kids are awesome.
They come to school each day with optimism and joy. They make me laugh and make my day each and every day.
I believe students benefit from reading fiction that celebrates the diversity of culture and exposes them to the challenges that life can present. I’ve asked for chapter books that spotlight diverse characters. From kids who have African, Hispanic, Asian or European ancestry to kids with ADHD and autism.
I believe that kids will easily accept differences if they are exposed to them in a positive way.
We are a neighborhood school with one predominant culture. As my kids will be in 3rd grade and working on their reading stamina, these chapter books will provide great practice as well as high interest. I would like to expose my students to fictional characters that honor their culture but also that familiarizes them with characters of other cultures as well as life challenges.
