Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I am a third grade teacher at P.S. 345 in East New York, Brooklyn. About 98% of our students receive free lunch. The majority of the students in our school are below grade level.
Our students are highly motivated and have the desire to learn, but are faced with so many challenges. The first of their many challenges is the lack of materials we have to support the science curriculum. Students are being lectured to about Force and Motion, Matter, and Weather, to name a few. But, to their dismay, our school does not have literature to review and fully comprehend the concepts through it's text and pictures. That is why I want to create an appealing science library in my classroom.
My students would benefit greatly from a library that is filled with up-to-date, exciting material that isn't faded or missing pages. Libraries capture student's interest and pull them into developing their literacy. For my classroom library, I would like my students to have books that are colorful and interesting to them. I want this to be a place where students feel welcome and comfortable and open to science more freely.
It isn't only 9 months that I share with each of them. I follow their triumphs and losses until they graduate from our school. Thank you for taking as much interest in my students as I do.
