I currently work at a school for children with disabilities. Most of these children are diagnosed with autism or a related disorder. These children are faced with challenges every day of their lives and our school is trying to make a more safe and relaxing environment for them. We focus on coping skills to help encourage the learning process of the child. We find that these items distract the mind enough to help promote their learning. Environment is key with these children and learning their needs with their wants is always a struggle.
I am starting fresh this year and are in need of classroom supplies. I would like to start with some sensory items to make sure my classroom has all they need to keep them engaged while they are learning. You would think playdough and painting is fun, which it is, but, children are strengthening muscles to help them grow, using their imagination, and interacting with other peers. Children need to strengthen certain muscles in their hands to be able to write a paper or draw a picture. Children also need to use their imagination and interact with peers to allow them to grow and become who they are going to be in the world. It's not all papers and pencils in my classroom.
