In-Demand Authors and Series: Building a Fifth Grade Classroom Library
Help me give my students books by popular authors like Rick Riordan, Raina Telgemeier, and W. Bruce Cameron as well as popular series like The Warriors and Goddess Girls.
Our school is a high performance focus school, which means we serve students with a wide range of learning needs. Our school is working hard to ignite the love of reading in all students. My class is part of a Cantonese biliteracy pathway program, so my students are able to share the love of reading and language in both Chinese and English.
By having the opportunity to read their "just-right book" (a book of their choice at their reading level), my students are able to thrive in building their needed literacy skills, because they can read books they love and relate to.
Literacy is a main focus in both our school and class. We spend two hours on reading and writing daily, and this requires students to be able to silently read a book of their choice and analyze what they read afterwards. My students often ask me for specific books to read and write about during our reading and writing time.
My Project
Ten-year-olds read voraciously, devouring one book after another. Our class schedule has time dedicated daily to independent reading because our students benefit from more time reading. That is why it breaks my heart when students cannot find the books they want in our classroom library. We go to the school library once a week, but that is not enough for my students to find the books they want.
My students will be thrilled to have books by popular authors as well as popular series in their classroom library.
I imagine that my students will feel like they are in a candy shop.
The classroom library represents the home of our class' reading community (Mulligan & Landrigan, 2018). Students will choose books on their just-right level. Then, they will think, talk, and write about the books. A sign of success is when students make recommendations to each other about what to read when adults are not around. With your help, we can build a classroom library that supports our fifth grade readers and writers.
