I am a first grade teacher at a charter school on the south side of Chicago. As a first year teacher, there is a limited amount of resources that I am able to supply to the students. The students, as well, have limited educational resources available to them outside of school, considering that the school is located in a lower/working class area. Reading is an essential part of these students succeeding in and out of the classroom. I want to provide the opportunity for my students to bring their education home. My school has a program called BookIt! that is running through the majority of the year. It started in October and will continue through the end of March. In my class, the students have to read five books a month in order to receive a certificate. This may not seem like a lot to some people, but having five books at home that is appropriate for them to read is a struggle in some of their homes. Unfortunately, I have noticed that only a handful of my 25 students are able to complete their goals, due to the lack of books available to them outside of school. I cannot afford to send books home that I already have in our classroom library, with the chance that they will not return. If I could get a variety of small, paperback, beginning reader books, I would feel more comfortable with the students taking them home. These books would be more age appropriate for them than the books I currently have. With a bigger classroom library, my students' education can be benefited that much more. I am looking to set up a book checkout system in my classroom so my students are able to read books at home in order to be a part of the BookIt! program, and work on their reading skills outside of school. Hopefully, the students will be able to check out at least 2 books a week, depending on the number of books I am able to receive. I do not want the students at this school to suffer just because of an economic disadvatage. It is not fair to them, and I am hoping to start their educations off on the right foot. The more resources we can provide to them in and out of school, the more successful they can be in the future. I am looking for help to get this system started in order to benenfit my students as much as I can.
