My school is rural, small, and community-centered. I teach 4K-8th-grade general music and choir, which means I get to see and build relationships with every single student in the building. This is only my second year teaching, but I am looking forward to seeing most students grow for over 9 years of their education! How exciting! One thing I love about my school is how community-centered it is and how families are really close-knit with the teachers, staff, and other families.
My students especially LOVE to play instruments!
They light up when they walk in the room to see drums or xylophones out for them to play! One unique thing I particularly enjoy about my middle school students is their willingness to travel to nursing homes and the county special needs school to share music with other people! They are genuinely happy to be serving our community with music!
My Project
My students love to use instruments in music class. My goal is to get a pitched percussive instrument so that even with my largest classes, I have enough instruments for one per student. These glockenspiel barred instruments will help my students learn how to improvise their own melodies in class, will give them a first step towards reading music on the page and transmitting it to an instrument, and will help give them confidence in playing in an ensemble together. I have several special needs students in my elementary classes who love to play instruments and on these types of barred instruments, it helps them achieve success quickly, just like any of my other students.
Pitched percussion instruments will be a key towards learning to create their own melodic compositions.
I am excited to hear what they will create with their own creativity!
