I am a first grade teacher at an elementary school in Onslow County, North Carolina. We currently have 43% of our students receiving free lunch and 2% are English Limited. Currently being a small school, with an increasing population, our funds are limited. In addition, we have a very diverse social and economic pool of students.
Reading is pushed strongly in our school making it important to have an assortment of books for children to read both individually and in small groups. Having books of different reading levels gives students a place to begin their adventure into learning. It is obvious that not all students learn the same way. In my classroom, we start reading groups with listening to the book on tape while they follow along in the book. Another day I read the book to the students as they follow along. Later, they all read the book together as a small group. Last, the students take turns reading their book, which they will be tested on for comprehension.
In order to increase the collection of reading books that will benefit the children, my class is in desperate need of these titles/series: Clifford the Big Red Dog, Henry and Mudge, Frog and Toad, Junie B. Jones.
