I want my students to be and feel successful every day. My goal is to make our classroom a place where my students feel challenged, supported, and appreciated. A focus on academics and a calm, pleasing classroom environment help make this goal achievable.
I teach third, fourth, and fifth grade English language learners in a very diverse magnet school.
My students are eager, bright, and inquisitive. Their families come from Laos, Mexico, Liberia, Ethiopia, and Eastern Europe. The majority of my students are on free or reduced lunch and they lack the books and rich academic experiences that more economically privileged students have. They enjoy visual, hands-on, interactive lessons that allow them to explore topics of interest to them. My students have different levels of academic English proficiency, but are working hard and striving each day.
My Project
These classroom light filters, reading comprehension workbooks, and hands-on math activities and games will be used throughout the year over multiple years, by my third through fifth-grade English language learners. The classroom light filters will help cut down on students getting headaches and stomachaches, and will improve the overall mood of the classroom. The reading comprehension workbooks will be used to reinforce key skills and strategies such as summarizing and inferring. The math activities and game will provide my students with hands-on, practical applications and reinforce skills in place value, fractions, and operations. All of these materials will help improve my English Language Learners’ academic success and will add interest to our lessons, while supporting standards.
Supporting this project will provide my students with materials to improve the classroom environment.
It will also provide academic materials to challenge and engage them in reading and math, while supporting the mainstream curriculum.
