I am a veteran teacher of 41 years in the inner city school system. I am currently teaching low income students who struggle with home lives and daily living. I am trying to relate to them in a way that will motivate them and encourage them to do well on the state exam coming in March. They are at risk of failing this state exam again. Many of them have never passed this exam since they began taking it in third grade. It is time for some success!
Many of my students come to school ill prepared because their parents are not able to provide them with the necessary supplies for school. Many of my students are ill prepared for the statewide exam because their parents are transient and they have no stability in their lives. But every parent really does want what is best for their child. I am trying to motivate my sixth graders by giving them an experience with the vocabulary presented on the test in an exciting manner and a manner for which they can relate.
I have a set of CD's that were purchased at the National Association for Black Educators Conference. These CD's were written by Dr. Ron Kelley who is a certified teacher, principal, and college professor. I listened to his motivational speech about how as a principal his school achieved Gold Performance Acknowledgments for raising test scores in a very poor(academically and monetarily) school. These CD players will enable my students to do what Dr. Kelley's students did. They will be able to listen to them and learn from them.
These CD players will make it possible for the 6th graders in my school to learn new vocabulary words that will presented to them on the ISTEP exam. These students have experienced failure over and over again. Let's give them a chance to experience success!
