Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students come from working class families. Eighty-three percent are economically disadvantaged and seventy-five percent at risk. Despite a myriad of different ethnic groups and nationalities, they truly care for and support each other.
The mission of Air Force Junior ROTC is to develop citizens of character, dedicated to serving their nation and community.
Established in 1994, the program currently has one hundred and eighty-six cadets striving to better their future by gaining valuable life skills to include personal responsibility, discipline, teamwork, leadership, perseverance, citizenship and the value of community service. So far this school year, these cadets have performed over forty-four hundred hours of service to their school and community.
The program is “cadet led” which means the students plan, organize and account for all activities, equipment and performance standards under the guidance and leadership of three instructors. However, because the program is not a primary core program, obtaining technology for our classroom has been challenging.
My Project
Various cadet led tasks are accomplished daily to include uniform inspection on Thursdays, physical fitness on Fridays, and core values and attendance daily to name just a few. Additionally, cadets are required to complete at least one hour of community service each month; however, many will complete many more than the required number.
As with any organization, school or unit, there must be a means to accurately measure performance.
Especially in a Junior Reserve Officer Training Corp (military) unit, a way to determine who to promote to the highest ranks to lead the unit is a must. This measure of performance should not only be assessed on classroom grades, but unit participation and performance as well.
Today, our high school students are comfortable using technology such as cell phones and tablets with built-in applications. However, since joining this unit as an instructor, I have seen students use clip boards and printed spreadsheet to accomplish these tasks. But why are they not using technology, such as iPads, they know and understand? Providing the right technology will make all the difference to this unit for not only performance, but morale as well.
