"The typical teacher has children doing a lot of 'stuff.' How is what I am having children do creating readers and writers? -Regie Routman
Our elementary school is located in an urban school district in middle Tennessee.
We have about 750 students with over 70% qualifying for free/reduced lunch. My students are in first grade and include English Language Learners. In fact, we have 6 different languages represented in our class! Each of my students are unique and it is a joy watching them learn and grow.
My Project
My students need marker boards, book bags, primary journals, and binders for the Daily 5 literacy tasks We use the Daily 5 approach during our literacy block. The Daily 5 is a student-driven management structure that allows students to be fully engaged in reading and writing. Students are able to choose which tasks they complete: Read to Self, Read to Someone, Listen to Reading, Work on Writing, and Word Work. The white boards will allow students to practice Word Work without having to use lots of paper. The book bags will be used for students to keep their "good fit books" to read during Read to Self and Read to Someone. The primary journals will be used for students to practice Work on Writing. The binders are needed so students can have their own data binder in which they can track their progress during first grade.
The Daily 5 allows students to have a choice.
Choice is highly motivational and puts students in charge of their own learning. But in order to provide my students with the Daily 5 choices, we need these materials.
