Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I work at a K-8 charter school in downtown Los Angeles. Our students are predominantly Latino and language learners. Year after year our students struggle to improve their reading scores on state exams. We work very hard all year to get students to read and improve their strategies through non-fiction texts and novels. Some teachers work with programs that incorporate all of the strategies and language arts skills. Still, each year we see that some students fall behind. One teacher is working with 28 students at a time; that does not allow for much individualized help. Therefore, in the middle school years, the gap widens.
This year I will teach 7th grade Humanities to 56 students. Their reading levels and English levels will vary immensely. Some of my students will be reading at a 2nd grade level while others will read at a 9th grade level. Overall, they average at a 4th-5th grade reading level. I can teach reading strategies with a variety of texts that will be accessible to my students but ultimately they need more individualized practice with their level.
I recently bought a reading game that my students loved. It helped them practice answering "test like" questions with multiple choice answers and it allowed them to have fun at the same time. I would like help purchasing more of these games to help my students. In teaching reading I hope to incorporate one day of reading games per week. The games will incorporate different reading and language arts strategies that will help students focus on improving their reading with material at their levels. It will also allow me to help individual groups improve their skills while the whole class works independently. One day of reading games per week will not only be motivating, but will also allow the class more practice. My class thanks to you in advance.
