This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
My school is a Title I school that sits in the heart of Washington, DC. I have a group of 67 students who are fun loving, eager-to-learn new things, excited about school and love to read. My classroom would be considered a melting pot of cultural heritage and social needs. Many of my students have been in the U.S. less than 4 years. They inspire me every day.
To meet their needs, we incorporate a variety of learning strategies, group work, and alternative seating and learning options to ensure that each student's needs are met, right where they are!
My Project
Reading is a challenge and a joy for most kids. They struggle because they are emerging into using the strategies that we, as adults, take for granted.
Colorful, quality, real-world articles motivate kids to want to read and encourage them to apply the strategies they must learn to become life-long readers.
Using these magazines, students will read independently and in groups, utilize online tools, and engage in a variety of comprehension and writing activities to support their development.
Please consider donating this classroom set of StoryWorks and Scholastic News magazines to my 5th grade students.
Your donation will last all year round as the news magazines come once a week and follow current trends in the world.
