Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I will be teaching third grade reading and writing at a Title I campus in Texas in the upcoming school year. Of our campus population, 95% of our students receive free and reduced-rate lunch. Some of my students come from homes that are almost in unlivable conditions.
My class will consist of 40 very diverse bilingual students who mostly come from low-income homes.
All of the students at our campus are eager to learn and truly have a love of learning. All of the students in my class are English language learners (ELLs) at various levels.
My Project
I have been working on building our classroom library with books that my students can take home in their book bags to read. My students read every day in the classroom also for 30-45 minutes to improve their reading. I really want to make my classroom as comfortable as possible for my kids and create an environment that promotes literacy. Just as we adults enjoy pulling out a book in a nice comfortable spot I believe kids do too. While I can't give them a Starbucks Cafe I can work towards giving them a classroom with a cafe like atmosphere. In my cart you will find 2 lamps and side tables that include storage baskets for student supplies. I have also included a table for students to sit at as part of our flexible seating and a bookshelf to house more books. As James Patterson once said, "There's no such thing as a kid who hates reading, there are kids who love reading, and kids who are reading the wrong books.
Most of my students do not have access to books outside of school.
All of my students were impacted by Hurricane Harvey. They were forced to miss school for two weeks. Please help me on my journey to build lifelong readers by providing my students the right books.
