Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My classes are made up of students with very diverse backgrounds. I teach advanced students, students who are just learning English and some with learning disabilities.
Because all students are unique, I aim to make my lessons as engaging as possible and relatable to my students with hands on activities.
This helps my students see chemistry in their life, and not just as a subject reserved for scientists in white coats. The only problem is that intriguing hands on activities can get expensive.
My Project
Hands on activities increase students' curiosity and their desire to learn about the world around them. Students of every ability can find success when learning with hands on activities. Students will be using the lye, coconut oil, palm oil and essential oils to make their own soap while learning about acids and bases. Students will be able to make hypothesis, calculations and observations.
Students will also learn to work with their peers and gain a very valuable skill that they can take with them outside of the chemistry classroom.
I hope that with this activity, students will learn to see that chemistry is all around them and make them more excited about learning!
