Ms. M. from Brooklyn NY is requesting educational kits & games through DonorsChoose, the most trusted classroom funding site for teachers.
My students need supplie such as questioning/answer lights, bulletin board paper, flash drives, and pencil pouches because they do not have access to new supplies and deserve to start the school year in stride!
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
Coming from some of the toughest and most economically strapped neighborhoods in NYC, our students do not often have the financial freedom to make extra purchases, even when it comes to personal care items. On a regular basis, often times even daily, our students hear that they can not overcome where they live or their disabilities and that this is just the life they will have. A lot of our student population does not have a "typical" home life, often times living in group homes or homeless shelters. With these diverse socioeconomic settings present in my classroom, many students do not have access to the simplest of school supplies.
Within our classroom, we want to provide our students access to school supplies, so we can highlight their academic strengths, rather than letting them be ridiculed for their financial shortcomings.
With these supplies, our students will gain tolerance towards each other, and grow together as a class, and as individuals while progressing through their high school careers.
As a teacher, you want to provide access to the information you are presenting to all students. Being a teacher in Brooklyn, you see the differences in socioeconomic statuses just based on the school supplies a student can bring in. With the current economic situations, school budgets have drastically decreased providing our students with less school provided supplies. With this decreased budget, the financial gap has increased between the students who have and the students who have not. It is our job as educators to erase any differences and provide our students with the supplies needed to dominate the curriculum. With these school supplies, our students will use them in many roles to navigate the way through the curriculum.
We are requesting assorted classroom supplies that will allow my students to take ownership of their classroom and learning environment that will be used on an individualized level to help provide our students multiple access points to what is being taught.
With these assorted supplies like questioning/answer lights, bulletin board paper, flash drives, pencil pouches and other student requested supplies my students will be able to individualize their instruction to enhance their individualized learning.
Students should not have to fail because of limited school budgets and it is our job as their community to show them that their future matters, that they matter. Collectively with these school supplies, we can raise tolerance while improving our future generation!
